The Turpin Haunted House

From WHJE | 08:05

Peck_photo_small My mother dealt with terrible asthma in her youth. She could not enjoy outdoor activities and was plagued by wheezing and coughing whenever she participated in them. Therefore, Halloween was a misadventure for her. While her friends ran from door to door and screamed and shouted, Patti was forced to remain indoors. But, my grandmother just would not stand to have her daughter unhappy! She created a haunted house just for her. But what was just a game for my Mom and her family became a local legend and one of the first haunted houses in Indianapolis.

Clever Apes: Demystifying dinosaurs

From WBEZ | Part of the WBEZ's Clever Apes series | 08:47

Why do dinosaurs ignite our imaginations and why do we have so many misconceptions about them? In this episode, Gabriel Spitzer tackles those questions and an even bigger one: what is the best dinosaur?

Sereno_small

Brontosaurus? A sham. Triceratops? Awkward adolescent. Tyrannosaurus Rex? A total wuss. OK, maybe T-Rex was no wuss, but it definitely lacked dignity. It walked all bent over, may have been an opportunistic scavenger and possibly even had feathers. Feathers.

There’s no question: The dinosaurs of our youth have been irrevocably humbled. And yet movies, kids’ books and advertisements still perpetuate all kinds of misconceptions about dinosaurs that scientists long ago left behind. So why is it that dinosaur myths die so hard?

We consider that question in the latest installment of Clever Apes. We’ll also sort out, thanks to Chicago comic Dan Telfer, what is the best dinosaur. Oh yes, there’s an answer. Find out here.

The Mikie Show # 19, Marcia

From Michael Carroll | Part of the The Mikie Show series | 28:01

Join us for a conversation with Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Marcia Daniel. We talk about a day in the life and how anyone can beat a parking ticket—just kidding, but seriously, it's like on Law & Order but for reals. There’s also some news from way back when in time, a quiz and I think the Hi There’s make an appearance. Plus, we visit a Post Office, sort of. Why not join us for 28 minutes of all natural radio entertainment!

The Crane and the Straitjacket

From KUOW | 08:36

A struggling magician, struck with crippling osteoarthritis, decides to risk everything for the stunt of his life--escaping from a straitjacket while hanging from a crane sixty feet in the air.

Pipia_small Joey Pipia grew up with dreams of being a professional magician. But when he first moved to Port Townsend with his family, he wasn't performing enough to make a living. He found part–time work teaching movement classes to kids, and he and his wife focused on home–schooling their two daughters. Then, one day in the middle of class, Joey's hip seized up and he fell to the ground in pain. He was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis. Joey didn't just have to deal with the pain, depression and pressures to make a living. He had to prove to himself that he could still perform magic — by dangling 60 feet in the air in a straitjacket. Joey Pipia speaks with KUOW's Jeremy Richards.
