Girls_on_the_gridiron_1_small The women of the Chicago Force play football.  Real football, with tackling, and hitting, and all the brutality and passion you’d expect from the sport. There are over forty players on the Force of all ages, races and backgrounds, none of whom get paid to play but all of whom compete at the highest level possible for women in America.

Nick's Diary: Home School to High School

From Radio Diaries | Part of the Teenage Diaries series | 17:48

15-year-old Nick chronicles a turbulent year in his life.

“If you could give me any advice or give me some potion that would make people my age start liking me, or, I don’t know… I just need to know how to socialize or I’m gonna go nuts."

Td_nick_001_l_small Nick chronicles a turbulent year in his life. He’s 15 years old and hates school, but somehow he must learn to make friends.

“If you could give me any advice or give me some potion that would make people my age start liking me, or, I don’t know… I just need to know how to socialize or I’m gonna go nuts. As a child I was really happy, and I was really enthusiastic about everything I did; about cello, about my writing, about drawing, about school, friends, about everything. And since the beginning of Junior High, since I’ve gotten older, I’m not as idealistic as I used to be. I think I see life more as it is now and I’m not as dreamy and creative as I used to be. But, maybe it’s just still in my brain, in storage.”

This story is part of the Teenage Diaries series  produced by Radio Diaries for NPR. Since 1996, Executive Producer Joe Richman has been giving tape recorders to young people around the country to document their lives.

Magic

From Next Generation Radio | Part of the NPR's Next Generation Radio series | 06:17

Andrew Ngo is mesmerized by the mystery of magic.

Andrewheadshot100_small My name is Andrew Ngo. In my spare time I pull coins out of the air and I tear apart newspapers, only to restore them. It?s magic -- it?s what I love? and it?s what I want to do with my life. When I was just 7 years old, I took a trip to the world-famous Fisherman?s Wharf with my mom. I saw jugglers, hustlers, con-artists and more. But something caught my attention, and it still hasn?t let go. I saw a magician, standing in the middle of a circle of a massive crowd of people, walking on glass. I saw him liberate himself from chains and rope tied around him by the drunks in the crowd. And as he triumphantly held up the mass of chains and rope that had held him captive moments ago, I fell in love. I had been bitten by the magic bug and I was bitten bad.
