The inspiration for 'Harold' was the concept of 'identity.' What makes a person who they are? It might be possible to think of each person's life as a story, and each person's identity is how they tell that particular story. However, one side of a story is never the whole truth. In my mind, a person's identity is made up of their ideas of themself, and also it is made up of the story that each other person tells about them. To me, each story someone tells about a certain individual is the story of a different person. And each of those different people, each of those different stories, make up the singular identity of an individual. So the purpose of this piece was to find those other stories, to portray a person's identity without ever talking to them.

'Harold' took a very personal turn when my grandfather passed away rather quickly one day. The interviews for this piece were done the day of the funeral. They were conducted with close family members who felt like sharing fun stories of Harold and who he was. The two people heard here are his wife and daughter, though a longer cut will have bits from other daughters as well...

Memorable Goodbyes

From Shizue Roche Adachi | 02:06

What makes a goodbye linger in your memory...

48268_small What makes a goodbye memorable?  Is it the person you have to leave, the ambience, the dramatic setting, the finality of their wave, or the weight of those last words?  I asked passerbys to describe their most memorable goodbyes with the hopes that I might figure out what makes a farewell stick.
