Looking for new programming? PRX Music Format Curator David Srebnik has some suggestions. Below are pieces from series that he recommends, plus notes on why he picked them and links to the full series.

A note from David:

"To every season...

"Do you have new priorities or a new vision for music programming on your station in 2010? Is there something you want to do more on your station? Is there a show that just does not fit your current or new goals for sound and listener service?

"Here are some programs and features I've reviewed in the past that are available as a regular weekly series, or as limited, multi-week series. They might create a new bright spot on your schedule or fill a gap that will enhance your station's sound and service even further."

Tapestry of the Times - episode #1

From Tapestry of the Times | 59:00

A weekly look and listen to music that falls under the broad category of "Americana." But that means blues, folk, really early folk, spirituals, protest songs, jazz and everything in between. Host Aaron Henken also introduces original, foreign and exotic sounds that helped shaped Americana while also pointing out how Americana shows up in the music of foreign shores.

This not a scratchy record show or academic-laden music course taught in a monotone by an odd-smelling professor. Rather it is an engaging, entertaining and interesting musical program with superb hosting, writing and music selection by Aaron Henken.

Full series.

Episode1_small It's the inaugural episode of Tapestry of the Times, and we kick things off this week with a sampling of some of the label's original legends: Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie. We'll also hear blues from Warner Williams and Robert Jr. Lockwood, gospel music old and new, and international folk songs from Colombia, Cuba, and Iran. Real music, real people, and the stories behind the sounds... on Tapestry of the Times. A note to program directors: We're delighted to let you know that Tapestry of the Times is available to you as a NO-FEE LICENSE. Each weekly episode is 59 minutes long, self-contained, evergreen, and available to you free of charge.

European Jazz Stage 2009, program 1

From Radio Netherlands Worldwide | Part of the European Jazz Stage 2009 series | 59:42

PRX's and public radio's best kept secret -- and a jazz program that shows you don't have to be born in the USA to swing. The Big Band and Jazz Fusion programs are consistently among the series' strongest offerings.

(The series programs from 2007 and 2008 are also archived on PRX.)

Program 1 week 27

North Sea Jazz Festival,  Artist in Residence

The 33rd annual North Sea Jazz Festival brings us, as is the case each year, an artist in residence, who will perform on all three days of the festival, all in different arrangements.

This year it’s great vocal virtuoso Bobby McFerrin.

First we caught him in action on Friday with the NDR Big Band from Germany conducted by Geir Lysne.

Than on Saturday we recorded a trio gig with his friend from Cameroon, bas player and singer Richard Bona and Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista.

To finish it of with a duet on Sunday with German guitar wizard Ferenc Snetberger.

So stretch your vocal chords….and sing along!

Daniel Frankl Hosts.

TND: Woods and Panama! 3

From Connecticut Public (WNPR) | Part of the The Needle Drop series | 57:57

Music of today...literally; a program worth considering if your station's mission and vision is directing your audience to new music -- specifically the independent rock, pop, experimental and electronic scene. The show's producer has developed a finely tuned ear for choosing music and assembling musical sets that draw you in.

(Full Disclosure: I've been a "volunteer consultant," working with this show and its host/producer for about two years.)

010210tndblock_small Despite digging on Woods' 2007 LP At Rear House, I was a little slow on the uptake of their latest album, Songs of Shame. We've got tracks from that, and a peek at two upcoming 2K10 albums: Local Natives' Gorilla Manor and Surfer Blood's Astro Coast.

We also explore Panamanian jazz, funk, and calypso from the '60s and '70s via a new compilation from Soundway Records, Panama! 3: Calypso Panameño, Guajira Jazz & Cumbia Típica on the Isthmus 1960–75.

JOE STRUMMER'S LONDON CALLING - EPISODE 1

From Joyride Media | Part of the JOE STRUMMER'S LONDON CALLING series | 59:00

Not all musicians should host and program music on the radio, but this one should and did. Think of it as adding a new show to your schedule hosted by a guy with exquisite musical taste and an ego well in check.

Highly recommended for AAA stations, eclectic music formats and news stations with music in the evening or on weekends.

A Musician's Life: Francis Dunnery

From WXPN | Part of the A Musician's Life series | 05:00

Produced by Tracey Tanenbaum -- five minutes inside the musical and personal life and history today's singer/songwriters -- some famous, some not (yet).

Musicians are often the last person to ask about their music if you're looking for insight, coherency and brevity. Don't know how Tracey Tanenbaum does it, but the musicians in "A Musicians' Life" say the deepest, most memorable and revealing things about their own music. Each edition of AML, and each performer become memorable as they talk about why they write, what they write and how they write it.

To get a feel for this series -- check out several different performer snapshots.

Francisdunnery2_small Francis Dunnery joined the British band It Bites in the 1980's. But he fled the band and Great Britain to make a life for himself in the States. He's had commercial success as a solo artist but is equally at home in other roles (teacher, preacher, comedian). His latest album is called The Gulley Flat Boys.

Herbie Hancock Discusses the Popularity of "Watermelon Man"

From National Endowment for the Arts | Part of the Jazz Masters Moments series | 02:00

These short jazz gems are fun, informative, and each offers color and verve to the sound and spirit of your station. They can serve both creative and practical purposes as programming or interstitial elements -- or both.

I suggest you audition several (5-7...they're all short) to get a true sense of the depth and variety.

Newjazzlogo_small NEA Jazz Masters Moments highlight the jazz greats honored through the NEA Jazz Masters, a comprehensive program of jazz support that includes the NEA Jazz Masters Award, an NEA Jazz Masters tour with performances and educational activities, radio programming, a compilation CD, educational resources, and publications and reports. Nearly 100 radio segments feature eighteen NEA Jazz Masters, providing musical samples, historical information, and first-person anecdotes designed to give listeners added insight into the artists and their art.

11 Central Ave #96. Word of mouth marketing.

From 800 lb. Productions | Part of the 11 Central Ave series | 03:59

Not a music show -- but a rare example of short radio serial that has a place on the right stations at the right time.

The radio comic strip with the lovable-quirky-vulnerable-wise characters who live on 11 Central Ave. along with their friends and neighbors.

Frequently sharp, crisp writing and acting for radio that places you right at the kitchen table where the action, drama and lovable whining take place.

Please note -- it would be best to audition several shows from the series to get a sense of the overall sound and personality.
