"Jazz & the Civil Rights Movement" is an important one hour program that features Jazz music as the background with comments concerning the Civil Rights Movement timeline as a narration.


Jazz & the Civil Rights Movement is a one hour program devoted to seven classic Jazz recordings which focuses on the Civil Rights Movement. The subject matter pays attention to the sit in movement, the National Guard intervention to prevent integration at Little Rock Central High School, the Freedom Riders, the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Alabama, Rosa Parks and the Selma Marches.

The music is performed by Charles Mingus, Max Roach, John Coltrane, Clark Terry, Grant Green, Blue Mitchell and Art Blakey.

This one hour program is divided into three sets with room for the News, PSA's and announcements.

PART A (1st hour) of Volume #1 of the Untold Story of the Five Stairsteps. Joining Howard Burchette is Clarence Burke, Jr., Clarence Burke, Sr. and Betty Burke. During this hour we discuss the early history of the Five Stairsteps in Chicago.

Parts A, B and C are separate hours and can be aired on different days.

Stairsteps_prx01_small The Five Stairsteps is a R&B family group which was founded by husband and wife, Clarence Burke, Sr. and Betty Burke, Their six children Alohe (Rami), Clarence Jr., James III, Dennis, Kenny and Cubie made up the group. A total of six albums were recorded as Stairsteps, two albums as The Invisible Mans Band and four solo albums for Keni Burke.

They are know as The First Family of Soul!.

SEGMENT ONE: Introductions of Clarence Burke Jr, Clarence Burke, Sr. (Papa Stairsteps) and Betty Burke (Mama Stairsteps), concept of forming the group, early talent shows and then 16 month old Cubie added to the group.

SEGMENT TWO: Early Chicago talent shows, The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield, Mrs. Betty Burke tribute, Howard Burchette dinner at Mrs. Betty Burke's home, meeting Burke family in 1970 at Tads Steakhouse (NYC), mention of Curtis Pope (Midnight Movers).

SEGMENT THREE: Mrs. Betty Burke’s sister danced with Katherine Dunham, story of Mr. Clarence Burke Sr. as a Chicago detective, Clarence Burke, Jr. mentions new stage act, possibility of a new Stairsteps album and reunion.

The Afro Cuban Messenger: Mongo Santamaria

Mongo Santamaria was best known for "Watermelon Man" and "Afro Blue". He was a percussionist and Cuban. He will most likely be remembered as the best Afro Cuban drummer of all time. He was the Afro Cuban Messenger.


He was probably the most popular percussionist in history. Mongo Santamaria was born in Cuba and began performing at an early age. He began to tour prior to 1950 with the Perez Prado Orchestra and immigrated to the United States with the band. He soon joined the Tito Puente Orchestra and then joined the Cal Tjader Sextet when he became an important sideman. While with Tjader he began to record and performed as a solo artist and bandleader. Some of his early solo recordings featured the musicians from the Cal Tjader Sextet.

On today’s show we will examine some of the early records of Mongo Santamaria , plus music from his booagloo period, Latin Jazz, rumba / folklore rhythms and of course his classics.

The Ashford & Simpson Story: (Celebrating the Life of Nicholas Ashford) Part #1

The musical story of "ASHFORD & SIMPSON", today plus the celebration of the life of NICHOLAS ASHFORD (May 4, 1941 – August 22, 2011). ASHFORD & SIMPSON released their first recording in 1964, and in 1966 were hired by Motown to write songs for MARVIN GAYE & TAMMI TERRELL. While at Motown they were producers of hits for DIANA ROSS. VALERIE SIMPSON would soon release solo material for Motown, and the duo would release their music together in the 1970's and 1980's on Warner Brothers Records. A musical focus on song writers, producers and performers "ASHFORD & SIMPSON".


Ashford & Simpson are one of the greatest song writing teams in history.  They have written and produced songs that not only have become classics, but are icons in modern music. During this hour, we will explore some of the early music of Ashford & Simpson. This includes their first release in 1964 and their No. 1 hit for Ray Charles in 1966.

Several songs during this hour are Motown classics from Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrill, Diana Ross, Valerie Simpson and the Dynamic Superiors. Memorial gems from performers Ashford & Simpson of the 1970’s are included during this hour.

The RARE EARTH story with Gil Bridges Vol. I

Gil Bridges the founder and leader of Rare Earth talks about the band's history before, during and after Motown.


They are Rock, Soul, Funk and hit makers. They are Rare Earth. Gil Bridges talks about the history of Rare Earth. The band was created in the early 1960's calling themselves The Sunliners. They recorded their first album on Verve Records with help from Dennis Coffey. By 1969, they were at Motown and worked with Norman Whitfield and help to form the Psychedelic Soul sound. On this show we will listen to the many sounds of Rare Earth, plus the Temptations, Edwin Starr, The Undisputed Truth, Rose Royce and many others.
