Myra when she was a young girl, used to carry water for the elders. This one elder would leave her a dime for carrying his water but Myra wouldn't take it but her mother told her not to refuse his gift to Myra, so Myra took it. A dime bought a lot in those days.

Prepared by Donald Chosa Jr - Dish 1 is Popped wild rice with dried cranberries and blueberries. Dish 2 is Wild Rice Deer meat and Hazelnut Hot Dish .

Popped wild rice with dried cranberries and blueberries
3 cups handparched net lake wild rice
3 cups of canola oil
1 cup of dried blueberries
1 cup of dried seedless cranberries
2 cups of sliced hazelnuts
½ cup of granulated maple sugar
Pour the canola oil into a small saucepan and turn the stove on to medium heat. After about 5 minutes drop a kernel of wild rice into the oil. If the kernel of rice immediately rises to the surface of the oil and puffs up then the oil will be at the right temperature. If the kernel doesn’t rise to the surface or puff up then the oil is not hot enough so wait 2 minutes and try again.
After the oil is hot enough put 2 tablespoons of rice into an all metal sieve, preferably about the same size as the saucepan and dip the sieve with the rice in it, into the hot oil. After the rice puffs up, and it should only take a few seconds to puff up. Then dump the rice into a bowl lined with paper towel to absorb the excess oil. Repeat the process until all of the rice is used. Then remove the saucepan from the heat.
Stir the popped rice to make sure any remaining oil is absorbed by the paper towel. Gently grab the paper towel and slowly slide it out from under the popped rice while gently shaking off any rice on it then discard the paper towel. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir until mixed and serve.

Wild Rice Deermeat and Hazelnut Hot Dish Recipe
4 lbs of deermeat cut into stew meat browned
3 cups hand parched net lake Wild Rice
1 cup of chopped wild onions
1 cup of hazelnuts cut in half
4 10 ½ oz cans of Campbell’s beefy mushroom soup
8 cups of water
2 tablespoons beef gravy base
2 tablespoons sea salt
2 tablespoons canola oil
Brown the deermeat with canola oil in a frying pan. Put the deermeat into a large rectangular baking pan. Add all of the other ingredients and cover. Place into the oven and bake for 1 hour at 375 degrees. Remove from oven and let sit for 20 minutes before serving.

Baked duck and wild rice
2 ducks
2 cups hand parched rice
1 cup sliced carrots
1 cup sliced celery
½ cup chopped onion
Dash salt and pepper
Water
Bake the duck at 350 degrees for 2 hours, with 1 – 2 inches of water. Remove from oven then add rice, carrots, celery, onion, salt and pepper. Then add enough water to cover the rice, bake 1 more hour or until rice is done.

In Ponema, Mn, you can tell you are in a different place for they still bury their departed in the front yard. Antone's talk covers a wide range of topics and how they pertain to the language and culture. This writer can not convey enough to import how good of a presentation this was.

Anthony Nichols interviews Jane Villebrun about the history of Nett Lake. Jane begins with her recollections of being born in the village of Nett Lake and being raised there. Jane recalls that the Depression did not really affect the families way of living. Her grandpa was in the logging business which along with a garden helped to provide what was needed to get by. Her siblings all chipped in to help with the chores. Jane recalls how their family wintered in a location referred to today as 'sugarbush' which is close to Pelican Lake. Jane went to Orr School, which was in the town of Orr, Minnesota. Jane and her family ended up living in the village of Nett Lake where she continues to live today.

Allison Herrera begins with the location of the Lake Vermilion Boarding School. Allison then introduces author, Dr. Linda LeGard Grover, a professor of Native American Studies at the University of Minnesota in Duluth, MN.
Linda begins with a story about her uncle Bob. Bob wanted Linda to know that his mother had no choice but to send the kids to the boarding school. Linda's description of the boarding school situation is very powerful, in a disturbing, not good feeling sort of way. Linda's uncle Bob and his family understood that when he was eight years old, that it was time for him to leave the family to attend school, away from home.
Linda tells of the viewpoint and intention of Colonel Pratt, the founder of the Boarding School programs, quote 'kill the indian, save the man' un-quote

Dwayne was drafted into the army and served in Vietnam. Dwayne shares his mother's reaction of being scared that her son was going to Vietnam. Dwayne, shares the perspective of how Vietnam is similar to his home of Nett Lake, the people, how life was lived more off the land. Dwayne shares some of his challenges of coming back home after Vietnam, even the thought of going back to Nam instead of being treated as he was. Dwayne is proud of the men he served with, to the point of calling them 'brothers'.

Billy grew up on the Pine Ridge reservation being a mixed blood which made things a little more different in his involvement in cultural events. Billy, being a half blood (half white, half souix) he was not accepted by either culture. Billy has overcome that and shares his message of strength and to pursue your dreams, which helped him win his gold medal.

Jacque's maiden name is King and grew up in Nett Lake, Minnesota. Jacque shares how her dad brought home a lot of ducks and how Jacque and her mother, spent all night, plucking, cleaning and singeing the ducks. The next morning she went to school. Jacque was asked to run for Tribal Council, which she sat as a council member. After Jacque's Council service, she went to work to helping people getting jobs, as this is something she was good at.

Gene Goodsky, shares his Ojibwe name then describes his early experiences at harvesting wild rice. Gene and his first ricing partner harvested about 200 lbs of green rice and to Gene's surprise, his partner gave him half of the rice. Gene began as a paddler then moved on to be a 'knocker', harvesting the wild rice. Gene describes a little bit about the colors of the wild rice, that occur during the natural ripening of the wild rice.

Clyde Howard Bellecourt (born May 8, 1936) is a White Earth Ojibwe civil rights organizer noted for co-founding the American Indian Movement (AIM) in 1968 with Dennis Banks, Herb Powless, and Eddie Benton Banai, among others. His older brother, the late Vernon Bellecourt, was also active. Clyde was the seventh of 12 children born to his parents (Charles and Angeline) on the White Earth Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota. His Ojibwe name is Nee-gon-we-way-we-dun which means "Thunder Before the Storm."
