The contributions of the Black Man—celebrating Black History Month. Recounted in this installment is the life, times, and legacy of Phillis Wheatley, the first published African American woman.

Black_history_1_small A slave child and America's first published Black poet, Phillis Wheatley's shining spirit returns in this tribute to her life and works. Due in part to the progressive-mindedness of her master—an oddity at the time—Phillis received an education that was unprecedented for a slave and women in general. She used this education to produce works that inspired even General George Washington, and her great verses continue to inspire to this day.

The contributions of the Black Man—celebrating Black History Month. In this program, we hear the history of the first North African to set foot in North America.

He came as a slave to Spanish conquistadores around the year 1530. Known as Estevan or Esteban and sometimes Estebanico, the Moor spent his enslaved years following Andres Dorantes de Carranza through North America in attempts to colonize the natives and capture their wealth. Toward the end, only Esteban was left to carry out the mission into the North American interior.

His educated mind, as one escaped from slavery, became an invaluable help to the spread of the abolitionist movement. Here now is his story.
