Classical New England presents The Music of Downton, a series of short thematic features about British music from the early-20th century era of the popular Masterpiece Classic series, "Downton Abbey".

Masterpiece Classic's dramatic series "Downton Abbey" draws viewers into a world of tradition and transformation in early 20th century Britain. The lives of all the characters associated with the grand estate in the fictional town of Downton reflect the social, technological, and political tensions of the times - regardless of whether those lives are "upstairs" or "downstairs", in the mansion.

Join us at Classical New England to explore these themes as reflected in the music of the time. British-born conductor and composer Andrew Massey is our tour guide, navigating the undercurrents of the era and illuminating how composers like Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Holst, and others responded musically to their turbulent times.
