The Rhythm Atlas 61: Hanukkah Music Special 2018-12-02

From Denis McGilvray | 58:58

On this special edition of the weekly program, we’ll explore the many facets of Hanukkah music from around the world. We’ll hear some traditional klezmer tunes, several pieces from the new album 'Shimmering Lights' by Yale Strom's Broken Consort, songs from the Sephardic Jewish culture that has roots in Spain, and some festive modern takes by artists such as Pink Martini with Ari Shapiro, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Julie Silver, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, and Carole King. Many of the songs speak of the traditions associated with Hanukkah: gathering for parties with family and friends, lighting the candles on the menorah, and enjoying delicious food and drink. Also featured throughout the program are several spoken pieces from the wonderful album 'Oy Chanukah!' In these pieces we hear about Hanukkah traditions and reminiscences of Hanukkah celebrations from the early twentieth century by elders in the Jewish community. It's an eclectic mix of Hanukkah music with a little something for everyone.
