In 1967, Bob Dylan and several members of what became The Band got together in upstate New York. For months, they played and played – and recorded as they went along. It took 8 years for some of the music to come out officially, but in that time, the legend of The Basement Tapes grew. Bootlegs were passed around, little hints of the bigger treasure that existed somewhere.

In this one hour radio special, you’ll hear about these recordings from The Band member Garth Hudson, songwriter and author Sid Griffin, Dylan biographer Clinton Heylin, author Greil Marcus, writer Anthony DeCurtis and producer Steve Berkowitz, plus many highlights from the full release of The Basement Tapes.

WHETHER IT WAS HIS INTENTION TO OR NOT, BOB DYLAN CREATED A MODERN MYTH IN 1965. ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS PLUG IN AN ELECTRIC GUITAR AT THE NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL. TO THIS DAY, NO TWO PEOPLE AGREE ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. BUT THAT WAS DYLAN'S THIRD APPEARANCE AT NEWPORT, AND LOOKING BACK AT HIS ARTISTIC PROGRESSION FROM 1963 TO 65 AT LEAST SHOWS US WHERE IT ALL STARTED. With the mantle of folk protest singer off his shoulders, Bob Dylan launched into a flurry of creativity in the mid-1960's. His sound exploded with electric instruments and a blend of folk, rock, blues, and gospel influences. By the late 60's, Dylan was singing country music like he had grown up in Nashville. His lyrics still commented on the world, but through a wider lens that mixed personal reflection with mystical and surreal images. In this hour, we'll hear how Dylan found his own unique voice, and how that changed rock and roll for a long time to come.
