Thanksgiving Blues (Episode 1547)

From John Luttrell | Part of the Full-Time Blues Radio series | 59:00

This week brings us the semi-annual Thanksgiving edition of the program, featuring a mouth-watering selection of songs in all flavors of the Blues.

Full-time-blues-logo-white-2010_small It's an impressive spread of food themed tracks for your holiday season soundtrack, with all but two of the songs coming off 2015 releases - an impressive feat for a themed episode. We were fortunate to even have a featured selection from "Johnny's Mailbox" that fits right in with the Thanksgiving topic. "Mama's Cookin'" comes off the new album by Brad Vickers & His Vestapolitans. The new CD, That's What They Say is available now.

Full-Time Blues Radio brings listeners the widest variety of new Blues music. That means we'll never play the same song twice in this program's lifetime! The weekly series is hosted by "Johnny Full-Time" and features new material by today's stars, tomorrow's legends, and self-produced indie artists from around the world. In addition, each week we dig inside "Johnny's Mailbox" to spotlight a new album that just arrived in the last seven days. Occasionally, we'll hear news about Blues on wax in "The Vinyl Report." From time to time, you may hear an interview or in studio performance, as well.

We'll hear music and conversation from Fellows in years gone by, like Doc Watson, Staple Singers, Clifton Chenier, Ralph Stanley, B.B. King, Flaco Jimenez and New Orleans' own Treme Brass Band.  Then we present the 2015 Fellows, many performing live from the stage at George Washington University, including the Gee's Bend quilters, a circus aerialist, Piedmont bluesman, klezmer musicians, mariachis and more.

Thanksgiving is a time when many people think of hearth and home.  This week’s Across the Blue Ridge brings us home and to thoughts of home.  You’ll hear a selection of songs and tunes that evoke a sense of family, place, tradition, love, and sometimes loss or homesickness.  We hear from some outstanding tradition bearers of the past and present, including E.C. and Orna Ball of Grassy Creek, NC with their comforting sound; and West Virginia fiddler Wilson Douglas, who brought unique phrasing, melody and timing to each of his old time tunes.  He even played a Scottish tune known better in New England than in the mountain south.  We’ll hear that, plus a New England version.  Classic harmony singing abounds this week, with performances by the Delmore Brothers, The Carter Family, James Leva & Carol Elizabeth Jones, and more.

Ghost Suppers & Food Sovereignty (hour)

From With Good Reason | Part of the Thanksgiving Specials series | 53:53

Remembering the dead through food - Teaching traditional food gathering techniques - Recording Native American food ways - Decolonizing your diet

Rice-gathering_small

This is the season of the Ghost Supper, where tribes in the Great Lakes region honor ancestors and loved ones with traditional and favorite dishes.  Lee Sprague is teaching young people how to harvest and eat the foods that once sustained their tribal ancestors.  Also: Ashley Atkins Spivey explores the food gathering—from traditional to modern-day--of the Pamunkey Indian Tribe of Virginia.

Later in the show:  Foraging expert Kevin Finney directed the Jijak Inter-tribal Food Summit.  He worries that many Native recipes have been erased from history and urges people to buy not just local food, but local Native food.  And: Catriona Rueda Esquibel, is co-author of Decolonize Your Diet, a cookbook that ditches the fast food culture by promoting Mexican dishes that are healthy and rich in plants indigenous to the Americas like corn, beans, squash, greens, herbs, and seeds.

The Harvest Home 2009 radio show is produced and hosted by Jay Ungar and Molly Mason.  This program has become something of a tradition for many stations across the country for the Thanksgiving season.  The songs featured are “hand picked” by Jay and Molly from their vast archive of traditional and historical American recordings from a wide range of artists.  The songs all have a theme of autumn, Thanksgiving, and of course food!  This year’s show features performances by Robert Johnson, Chet Atkins, Vassar Clements, The Duhks, Bill Monroe, Pete Seeger, Robin and Linda Williams, Merle Haggard, Jay & Molly themselves, and others.  All hosted with the “down home” flavor for which the couple are famous.

Jay was born in the Bronx while Molly grew up in Washington State. Their collaborations began with a chance meeting in the late 1970s when Jay and Molly were both performing at a rural New York club.  Since joining forces—both artistically and romantically (the two would marry in 1991)—they have become one of the most celebrated duos on the American acoustic music scene.

Jay and Molly are possibly best known for their musical contributions to the films of Ken Burns. The high point to date was the selection of Ashokan Farewell as the main theme of the landmark PBS documentary The Civil War. Ashokan Farewell has become an American classic and many artists from a wide variety of musical genres have performed the piece.  Jay and Molly continue today with their musical contributions to the films of Ken Burns and their music is again featured prominently in the recent broadcast of The National Parks on PBS.

Jay and Molly have recorded multiple albums for Angel Records - EMI, RCA Red Seal, and their own Swinging Door label.

On radio and television, Jay and Molly have appeared on CBS Good Morning, The Rosie O'Donnel Show, All Things Considered, A Prairie Home Companion, and the BBC's Transatlantic Sessions. They continue to broadcast their own live-performance radio show, Dancing on the Air, and they have no shortage of future projects.
